Navigating the Trans Euro Trail (TET) with Stegra.io
At its core, Stegra.io is built to give you the best routing engine for your own discovery—whether you’re hunting for hidden unpaved gems or smooth, winding tarmac somewhere new. You can create your own adventures anywhere, anytime on any device.
However, we know that riding a legendary curated route like the Trans Euro Trail (TET) is a bucket-list dream for many riders. It’s certainly on our list, too. Stegra is designed not just for creating routes from scratch, but also for navigating with distinct advantages.
What is the TET?
The TET is a massive network of legal, scenic, and adventurous routes across Europe curated by local volunteers known as “Linesmen.” Their goal is to provide stunning routes through Europe’s diverse landscapes.
Because trail conditions on the ground change constantly due to weather, road quality, or legal changes, these routes are frequently updated based on real-time rider reports, allowing Linesmen to correct issues and maintain access.
Important Note: To ensure you are following the most current, legal, and open paths, always download the latest GPX files directly from the official Trans Euro Trail website.
Importing the Trail into Stegra
Once you have your files, you can bring them into Stegra in two ways, depending on your preferred workflow. No matter which method you choose, your routes stay perfectly in sync across all your devices.

1. Precision Planning: Stegra Studio (Web)
For the best preparation, we recommend using our Web Studio (Studio 2.0). This offers the most control over the data before you ride:
- Selective Import: Don’t need the whole country? Choose to import specific segments or just a single day’s ride rather than the entire set at once.
- POI Filtering: You can surgically select exactly which Points of Interest (POIs) to import—such as specific campsites or fuel stops—filtering out the noise you don’t need.
- Terrain Data: View the unpaved percentage for each section before you import, so you know exactly what kind of riding to expect.
- Plan on Web, Ride on App: Once you save your import in the Studio, it is instantly available in the Stegra app on your phone or tablet.
2. Quick Start: The Stegra Mobile App
If you’re already geared up and ready to go, you can import GPX files directly into the mobile app for immediate use. It automatically adds the routes to the map and prepares turn-by-turn instructions and unpaved calculations.
Merge Sections into one Route
A great way to work with the Trans Euro Trail in countries that have multiple TET sections is to merge those sections into a single, continuous route. With the new merge tool in the web-based Studio 2.0, you can do this easily.
You can even reverse the directions of specific sections directly within the merge tool to ensure your fully merged route flows exactly the way you want. Choose between different connection points, whether it’s the absolute closest point, head-to-tail, or where sections overlap. If there is a large gap between sections you want to merge, the engine will generate a connection route where you can apply any route mode and options you like. You can also split routes at specific places when needed.
Watch the Breakdown: Learn more about the merge tool in our latest YouTube video! We also cover the newest route mode options, including the unpaved slider, curvature slider, and the ability to include or exclude tracks based on track grades.
The Stegra Navigation Advantage
Navigating a traditional GPX track can often feel like just following a static line on a map. Stegra transforms that track into an active, intelligent journey.
Smart Turn-by-Turn & Voice
While the TET consists of raw GPX tracks, our proprietary engine analyzes the path to generate precise turn-by-turn instructions, just like a standard road route. This includes full voice guidance, allowing you to keep your eyes on the challenging terrain ahead rather than constantly staring at your screen.
Seamless Transitions
The TET is often split into multiple sections which we translate to multiple routes. Stegra lets you have multiple routes on the map and handles these transitions invisibly. As you finish one section and enter the next, the app switches navigation automatically. Just add all of the TET-routes and ride without having to stop and fumble with loading new files.
Ride-to-Route
One of the biggest hurdles is often just getting from your driveway to the start of the trail. If you aren’t starting right at a TET entry point, Stegra makes the transition seamless. Simply tap the closest TET segment on your map and select “Ride to this route.” You can use any routing mode to get there—we recommend Adventure Mode or Curvy Tarmac if you want a taste of fun before you even hit the official trail.
Upcoming Features
We are constantly improving Stegra.io. Here is some of the stuff coming next to make your adventure even smoother:
- Simplified Off-Road Guidance: We are developing simplified turn-by-turn instructions for areas where official road data does not exist. This ensures you get guidance even on pure off-road sections.
- More Navigation Data: Distance to next Point of Interest on route, Elevation on current location and a re-designed navigation visuals.
- In-App Collections: Soon you will be able to view and manage your Collections of routes directly in the app, just like on the web. This is perfect for handling multi-section adventures like the TET, keeping all your days and alternatives organized in one place.

Rider Etiquette
Whether you’re following a Linesman’s trail or forging your own path with our engine, please ride with common sense. Respect local laws, protect the environment, and be mindful of the people and animals who call these places home.
Before heading out, please read the TET Code of Conduct. Following these rules is essential to keeping these trails open for future riders.
